Teaching Philosophy
Why is art important? Just take a look around you. From the cars we drive and clothes we wear to the gadgets and websites we use to stay connected to the world, art influences everything.
As an art educator, my goal is to help my students expand their comprehension and perception of the subject to see that art extends beyond the canvas or art room. My role in the classroom is similar to that of a tour guide. The students are the explorers who, through an integrated curriculum that involves art history (based on the belief that one must know where they’ve been to know where they’re going), basic art principles, applied technique, and engaged critical and creative thinking, learn to overcome obstacles, work through fears and gain self-confidence while discovering the vital role art plays in both their imagination and everyday life.
My experience teaching and working with a variety of mediums—including painting, drawing, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, glass fusing, comic/illustration art and photography—allows me to encourage creative growth, self-expression and the discovery of ideas among a wide range of students, all whom have different interests, strengths and skills. Additionally, my experience using HTML5, CSS3 and Java Script allow me to connect art with technology, showing students the integral role art plays in our ever-changing, technologically geared world.
